Romantic dinner in Dakar: shared injera, gursha and tej
A dinner for two in Dakar around shared injera: the gursha gesture, tej, coffee and a garden in Point E. What to know to plan an evening for two at ge'eza.

For a romantic dinner in Dakar, an Ethiopian meal has a real advantage: it is shared from a single platter, by hand, and the gursha, where you offer the other person a bite, makes it a tender ritual. At ge'eza in Point E, you can dine for two until 10pm in a villa with a garden and terrace, with a glass of tej, the Ethiopian honey wine.
Why injera suits a dinner for two
A successful romantic dinner depends on the attention you give each other, not on the sophistication of the dishes. An Ethiopian meal encourages that attention: the platter arrives in the middle of the table, on a large round of injera, with several stews placed on top. You tear off a piece of injera with your right hand, scoop up some sauce, taste, and offer some to the other. There are no individual plates, so no "each has their own": it is a meal that shares itself.
Injera is also a fermented flatbread, soft and slightly tangy, which serves as both plate and cutlery. The texture is surprising the first time, then you get attached to it quickly.
The gursha: offering a bite
The gursha is a gesture of affection specific to Ethiopian culture: you prepare a bite of injera with a stew and give it to the other person, straight into their mouth. It is done to honour a guest, a relative, a friend, a partner. The bigger the bite, it is said, the greater the affection. For a romantic dinner, it makes a lovely moment, provided you stay relaxed and laugh a little if it spills. See our article on the gursha.
What to order for two
- The beyaynetu for 2: the seven vegan fasting dishes on one large injera platter. It starts at 7,000 F for one person; the formula for two people is on the menu.
- The Ye Fisig Beyaynetu: three fasting stews and one meat stew of your choice, for couples who want both worlds. 10,000 F for two people.
- Doro wot (8,000 F): chicken slow-cooked in clarified butter, with a hard-boiled egg, the Ethiopian celebration dish.
- Tibs (8,000 F): meat sautéed with onions, tomatoes and fresh herbs.
- Kitfo (9,000 F): the Ethiopian tartare, to be ordered 24 hours ahead: remember to ask when you book.
- Sambusas (2,000 F meat, 1,500 F lentil, two pieces) as a starter to nibble.
One tip: order lightly at first, you can always add. The portions share well.
Tej and other drinks
Tej (3,500 F) is the traditional Ethiopian honey wine, sweet, lightly amber and naturally fermented. It is the natural drink for an evening for two. If you prefer alcohol-free, birz (2,000 F) is a honey water made of pure Senegalese honey and water. There are also homemade juices: bissap, ginger, bouye, at 1,500 F. To finish, an Ethiopian macchiato (2,500 F) or spiced Ethiopian tea (2,000 F).
Finishing with the coffee ceremony
To extend the evening, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a lovely idea: the coffee is roasted in front of you, ground by hand and served in three rounds, Abol, Tona and Baraka, with incense and dabo. About 45 minutes, 5,000 F for the full ceremony, booked in advance. It is a slow moment, for two, with no screens.
The setting: garden, terrace and art
ge'eza occupies a villa with a garden and terrace at 656 avenue Birago Diop in Point E. You can dine outside or inside, in a place that is also an art gallery: before or after the meal, you can look at works by artists from East and West Africa. If you are looking for other evening ideas, see our guide to going out in Dakar at night.
Booking
The house is open Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 10pm, and closed on Mondays. For a dinner for two, book online or message +221 78 660 07 07 on WhatsApp, saying what the occasion is and whether you would like an outdoor table. Mention any dietary needs and allergies.
An evening to mark an occasion
For an anniversary, a proposal or a reunion, tell the team when you book: they can advise you on the best time to come and on how the evening might unfold. Arrive a little before nightfall to enjoy the garden light, order at leisure, and let the coffee ceremony close the evening.
We do not promise any particular decoration or special menu: ask what is possible before the date. The essentials come down to little: a well-chosen table, a dish to share, time.
After dinner
If the evening suits, extend it with a walk around Point E, calm at night, or a last coffee. Plan your ride home in advance: a driver or a taxi you know will save you looking for transport on the way out.
