Saadio and the Streets of Dakar: Traffic, Taxis, the Corniche

Saadio's 'Embouteillage' (traffic jam), 'Arrêt taxi 1' and 'Arrêt taxi 2', 'Scène de rue' and 'Corniche Ouest': the city of Dakar as a source of titles in Saadio's mixed-media work. Pages, sizes and prices given on request at Ge'eza's gallery.

The work 'Embouteillage' by Saadio, shown at Ge'eza's gallery

"Embouteillage" (traffic jam), "Arrêt taxi 1," "Arrêt taxi 2," "Scène de rue" (street scene) and "Corniche Ouest": five titles by Saadio drawn straight from the vocabulary of Dakar's city life. All five paintings, in mixed media, acrylic and Posca on canvas, are available at Ge'eza's gallery, with the price given on request from each page.

A set of titles taken from the city

Saadio names several of his paintings after recognisable situations or places in daily life in Dakar. "Embouteillage," mixed media, acrylic and Posca on canvas, 150 x 150 cm, made in 2025, names one of the most widely shared moments for anyone moving through the city. "Arrêt taxi 1" and "Arrêt taxi 2" (taxi stop), 100 x 100 cm and 150 x 100 cm respectively, also from 2025, each carry this title at a different size. "Scène de rue," 100 x 150 cm, 2025, broadens the subject. "Corniche Ouest" (west corniche), 150 x 100 cm, 2025, names a specific stretch of Dakar's coastline, familiar to anyone who drives or walks along the ocean there.

These titles, taken from ordinary city situations rather than historical scenes or portraits, form part of Saadio's set of subjects, alongside other titles more tied to graphic sign.

Pages for "Embouteillage" and "Scène de rue"

Two pages can be reached directly from here: "Embouteillage", 150 x 150 cm, 2025, a large square format, and "Scène de rue", 100 x 150 cm, 2025, a rectangular format. Each page states the technique, the size, the year and the status of the work, with a photograph of the canvas. "Arrêt taxi 1," "Arrêt taxi 2" and "Corniche Ouest" round out this group, also visible at the gallery.

The mixed-media technique: acrylic and Posca

All five paintings in this series use mixed media, combining acrylic paint and Posca markers on canvas. Acrylic lays down the backgrounds and the larger fields of colour, while Posca, a pigment-ink marker, allows precise lines, graphic detail and crisp outlines layered over the paint. That combination produces surfaces where the gesture of painting and the gesture of drawing sit side by side on the same canvas, a trait found across a large part of Saadio's work.

As for care, a mixed-media canvas is treated much like a standard acrylic painting: kept away from direct sunlight, in a room with stable humidity, dusted with a dry, soft cloth rather than any kind of cleaning product.

Sizes built for different walls

"Arrêt taxi 1," at 100 x 100 cm, is the most compact format in the series, suited to an office or a hallway. "Scène de rue," "Arrêt taxi 2" and "Corniche Ouest," all close to 100 x 150 cm or 150 x 100 cm, need a wider wall, whether hung horizontally or vertically depending on the orientation of the format. "Embouteillage," at 150 x 150 cm, is the largest format in the group, a square that needs two to three metres of distance to be read as a whole.

Another side of Saadio's work

This series stands apart from another side of Saadio's work, whose titles point to graphic patterns such as wax print, or to subjects from popular culture such as Simb.

Two numbered titles

"Arrêt taxi 1" and "Arrêt taxi 2" exist as two separate titles, at two different sizes, 100 x 100 cm for the first, 150 x 100 cm for the second. Each page states its own technique, size, year and status, which is all that is needed to compare the two works.

The West Corniche, a well-known stretch of Dakar

The Corniche Ouest runs along Dakar's coastline, from the Almadies point toward downtown, and remains a busy road for both traffic and walking, used by morning runners and rush-hour drivers alike. It is this name, already familiar to anyone who knows the city, that Saadio's painting carries as its title.

Saadio at the gallery

Saadio has been shown at Ge'eza's gallery since the "Lien commun" exhibition in October 2025. His artist page brings together a large body of mixed-media work, on canvas or on kraft paper, moving between graphic patterns, urban scenes and more narrative subjects. The five paintings covered here form a subset whose titles point to the street and traffic in Dakar.
